Mike Penning MP, minister for shipping, announced today that government support for maritime training (SMarT) is to be retained until at least 2015, with an annual budget of £12m. This news comes after a period of uncertainty and demonstrates a commitment on the government's part to the ongoing training of merchant seafarers.by

The 114,500 GT cruise ship Costa Concordia ran aground last night at around 22:30 local time off the coast of the Italian Isola del Giglio.
The ship was carrying 3,206 passengers and 1,023 crew bound for Savona as part of a regular weekly cruise.
